Block editor jumping since using chapters below player

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Bug Reports › Block editor jumping since using chapters below player

  • Gillian W. 2 years, 6 months ago

I was delighted to find I could display chapters underneath the players, but unfortunately, the block editor has started jumping when I scroll beneath where the chapters show (in the editor). It jumps so badly that I have to use the code editor to make any changes. No jumping in the code editor…
I deactivated all plugins and the problem went away, then when I activated the FV Player (pro) it began jumping again.
Unchecking “Show VTT chapters below player” doesn’t make any difference.
I was hoping to include a screen recording but your system doesn’t allow them (from my Mac anyway).
I have 23 chapters on some videos. Is this too many?
    Best wishes,
    Andy

    Hello Gillian,

I tried to post a video with chapters using Gutenberg and I’m not noticing anything strange. Are you using Gutenberg or some page builder?

Does the same issue occur with a new video without chapters?

Does the issue go away if you change your window size?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,
    We use only Gutenberg.
Browser window size makes no difference.
I’m doing further tests at the moment because I suspect it only happens on pages where the video content is protected by our s2Member plugin.

    Best wishes,
    Andy

Also, I should have mentioned that you need to scroll down to the bottom of the block editor page, and sometimes wait for several seconds before it begins to jump.

    Naaa…
At my wits’ end with it now. I thought it might be the Custom Fields I use for setting the post display order, but even with that, and all other plugins (apart from FV Player Pro) deactivated it’s still jumping.
Using SiteGround Staging, I even deleted all the s2Member coding on the post which protects the video, and it still jumped.

The problem still happens when I create a new player.
It looks as though the video in the FV Player Gutenberg block refreshes – and the whole page jumps.
When it’s at its worst, you can’t even click inside a block to edit it.
I can upload a screen recording of it happening if you’d like to see it..?

I should have added that it still happens if the s2Member plugin is disabled…

    Hello Andy,

so far no luck with reproducing this issue. I tried to use 22 chapters in a video.

I see what you mean about the Gutenberg blocl refreshing though.

Could you please reinstall FV Player from this link? http://foliovision.com/downloads/fv-wordpress-flowplayer.zip

    It should fix your issue.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

That’s a vast improvement. It still jumps, but nowhere near enough to disrupt editing.
If I scroll to a position where the video splash image is not visible. When I scroll back to where it is visible again, it looks as though the thumbnail refreshes, and the screen jumps – but nowhere nearly as bad as before.

    It’s a huge improvement – thank you!

    Hello Andy,

do you use anything that might affect the way the images are loading? I think that Cloudflare might have something that might try to improve the image lazy loading. In FV Player the images use lazy loading. Please let us know.

Next thing to check is wp-admin -> FV Player -> Settings -> Sidewide FV Player Defaults -> Default Video Size. Are you using 100% there? Please try with 1920 and 1080 instead for width and height.

I’m still not sure why the preview would keep reloading though. Does it reload after you edit some text, or does it reload even if you are not typing?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    My apologies, Martin…
I was just showing Gill how much better it was – and when I refreshed the editor page, the problem came back. Not as badly as before, but enough to be irritating when you try to click on a block to edit it.
I don’t have to resort to using the Code Editor (as I did when it first happened).
Sometimes the Block Editor page only jumps a little bit, but at other times, it jumps to just below the chapter list beneath the player.
It’s worst when I scroll to the very bottom of the page.

Sitewide FV player Defaults video size is 1280 x 720.
The page jumps as a result of scrolling. When it was happening before, If I managed to click inside a block, it would stop jumping!
I just looked again, and it was stable, but when I refreshed the page, it began jumping.
Please understand, it’s FAR better since reinstalling the player this morning.
Forget what I said about scrolling to the very bottom of the page. Since I reloaded it, that’s inconsistent (sorry).

No Cloudflare. We use Amazon s3 and CloudFront.

    Hello Andy,

I think I got it – Gutenberg somehow triggers the edit event when the element leaves the viewport. This would trigger reloading of the FV Player preview when scrolling on the edit page, although in my case it wouldn’t jump up and down just a little bit.

Could you please reinstall FV Player from this link? http://foliovision.com/downloads/fv-wordpress-flowplayer.zip Then the issue should be fixed.

    Thanks,
    Martin
