Author gravatars not served from cache

Foliovision › Forums › FV Gravatar Cache › Troubleshooting › Author gravatars not served from cache

    Hi guys,
    I’ve recently installed this plugin and have noticed that only comment gravatars are served from the cache?
    I know I (and a lot of other blogs I’ve seen) use gravatars in relation to post authors – you can see here: https://willstocks.co.uk/ and here: https://willstocks.co.uk/author/will_stocks/ that the gravatar is served from secure.gravatar.com despite the fact that this gravatar is in my cache, due to having responded to comments.
    Is there a way to “force” serving these from cache to save the call out to secure.gravatar.com?

    Hello Will,

    it works that way as it only caches a single size (and retina size) for each avatar. So your author avatar is probably bigger.

    We were thinking about improving this, but in the end where the cached gravatar helps the most if a post with a lot of comments where a lot of people might just have the default one.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
    Thanks for the prompt response.
    I did actually try caching the size of the author gravatar, however this didn’t make a difference :(
    Is it possible to manually configure it to cache both comments and author gravatars, as that’d be absolutely amazing (saves that call out to secure.gravatar.com, which I always find is surprisingly slow even for small images)!! Alternatively, are you still thinking of expanding out this functionality?

    Hello Will,

    doing this is not so easy, as all the functions were written to work best with the comments.

    You could use a code like this to preload the avatars which you need:

    global $FV_Gravatar_Cache;
    if( !empty($FV_Gravatar_Cache) && method_exists($FV_Gravatar_Cache,'Cron') ) {
      $options = get_option( 'fv_gravatar_cache');
      $FV_Gravatar_Cache->Cron( $your_email,$options['size'] );
    }

    However then you would still have to solve the issue of appending the new records to the WP cache, as the plugins reads from this:

    $gravatars  = wp_cache_get('fv_gravatars_set', 'fv_gravatars');

    Thanks,
    Martin
