Videos not loading on IE11 and Windows 7

[Solved]

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Troubleshooting › Videos not loading on IE11 and Windows 7

  • Matthew B. 11 years, 4 months ago

I’m experiencing problems playing videos when using Internet Explorer 11 and Windows 7.

Any video on my site that also has a mobile video (e.g http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/how-to-download-ie9/ or http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/editing-configuration-files-notepad/) will NOT play using Internet Explorer 11 under Windows 7. I just get a HTML5 error video not found.

There is no problem playing in IE11 under Windows 8.1, or on other browsers. There is no problem in IE10 under Windows 8.

Videos that do not have the separate mobile version play just fine in IE11 and Windows 7.

Please can you look into it as this is affecting a number of my visitors.

    Thanks!

    Hello Matthew,

this appears to be a co-incidence of multiple factors. As you are our licensed user, I had a closer look:

    1) Encoding issue – it appears you had Audio Codec set to “Auto Passthrough” in Handbrake when you did the video encoding. Change this to “AAC (CoreAudio)”. Because the audio stream in the video was not re-encoded by Handbrake the video doesn’t play for us in IE9 and IE11.

Currently the audio codec field in our video checker is empty and it should say “ISO/IEC 14496-3 AAC”. Using “AAC (CoreAudio)” will help with that.

    2) Flash issue – by default we set IE to prefer Flash if it’s installed. However this doesn’t seem to work for IE11 (I’m doing a bit more testing on this).

    3) Please let us know what Settings -> FV WordPress Flowplayer -> Sitewide Flowplayer Default you have enabled and what shortcode you are using for this video. I’m not seeing our code which causes IE to prefer Flash in your site HTML.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Matthew,

    2) Actually this works. IE11 uses Flash when it’s told to do so.

    3) If this code wouldn’t be missing, the videos would play for IE users with Flash, so please let us know about that.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Hi Martin, thanks for looking into this, here’s the information you requested. My Sitewide flowplayer defaults can be seen here:- https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1488717/flowplayer-defaults.jpg

and here’s a copy of the shortcode:-

    [fvplayer src='http://topwindowstutorials-video.s3.amazonaws.com/PCMaintenanceTutorials/Dism-tutorial.mp4' width=570 height=440 mobile='http://topwindowstutorials-video.s3.amazonaws.com/PCMaintenanceTutorials/Dism-tutorial-mob.mp4' splash='//cdn.foliovision.com/images/2013/12/dism-tutorial-splash.png']

I’ll try to re-encode one of the videos and see if it helps too.

    Hi again Martin,

I don’t have an AAC (CoreAudio) option in my HandBrake, I see AAC (faac), AAC (ffmpeg) but no CoreAudio. Please advise?

    Martin 11 years ago

    Hello Matthew,

any of these should be fine – as long as you don’t use the “Auto passthrough” which basically does nothing to the audio stream.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

Great, a re-encode did seem to fix it, thank you. I’ve noticed Handbrake isn’t saving my settings (even though I made my own user preset) so I will be careful to check all options in future.

    Hello Matthew,

I’m glad we were able to figure out the encoding issue, I’ll update the documentation.

I was not however able to reproduce the issue with missing fv_flowplayer_browser_ie script. It should be used unless you are defaulting to Flash and you are not. It’s not so important if all your video mime types are correct and there are not encoding issue like this though.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I suppose if any browser was going to break it would have to be IE :)

I will continue to re-encode the problematic videos and change the message to encourage visitors to report problems on any other browsers. There’s so many devices accessing the web these days I can only imagine the challenge facing developers like yourselves!

    Hi there,
Sorry to jump in here, quick question about IE and flash – would we have to upload another video format flv for it to play in IE?

    Thanks

IE11 has not fully implemented HTML5 Video on the Windows 7 OS. The workaround is to use Flash, and I have done this quite seamlessly for some time. Now, this is a problem again since Adobe announced they are abandoning Flash Professional and moving most of the toolset to Adobe Edge Animate, which will output brilliant HTML5, but that doesn’t help me provide streaming content when the Flash Player is no longer being installed.

The only solutions available for viewing the streams effectively in all browsers seems to be keeping the Flash players alive a while longer for Win7+IE11 users.

    Hello R.,

this is an old thread. FV Player takes care of the Flash part for you. I’m not sure about all the HTML5 issues in IE11 from top of my head actually, but I guess Flash could make the playback more compatible for it.

    Thanks,
    Martin
