Amazon S3 hosted, user permission in guide not listed

[Solved]

  • John Davis 9 years, 2 months ago

I’m going through the process of setting up serving private videos through Amazon S3 (using your secure-amazon-s3-guide), and am stuck on step 8, adding read-only access permission to a user.

The drop down menu for attach policy (iam – users – my site – permissions) doesn’t contain any called ‘read only access’, or anything that seems refer to the S3 files/bucket/videos.

I looked at creating an inline policy, but that was beyond my very limited knowledge.

    Can you help?

    Thanks,

    John

    Hi John!

I just updated our documentation. Amazon made a few changes to the interface. Please have a look. You need to pick “AmazonS3ReadOnlyAccess” from the list.

Let us know if there is something else that is not clear.

    Thanks!

Many thanks for your quick reply. I’ve found the right policy, but do have two more (quick?) questions…

Firstly, step 27 of your guide says check the proper mime type in the metatab data for the file. However, for my .m4v file, there is no appropriate content-type in the dropdown menu. The default is application/octet-stream – is that OK?

Secondly, in the ‘region’ field of your plugin, there are a strange selection of regions to choose from. Is this field important, and if so, does it matter that you do not have the UK (my region) to pick from?

    Thanks again for your support,

    John

    Hi John!

I’m glad the updated documentation helped. Please try to post one query per problem. We received multiple copies and then it slows us a bit down. Thank you!

Q1: .m4v file should have mime type “video/x-m4v”. Unfortunately as you said only application/octet- stream is available to you. That means that the file is not encoded properly. You can use our guide how to change that.

Q2: From the drop down section menu you can choose the all regions offered by Amazon S3. We can only offer what Amazon offers. Here is a list of the regions you can choose from. Closest one for you would be EU (Ireland). You should base the choice of a bucket on the location where majority of your customers/visitors comes from.

    Hope this will help.

Many apologies for posting twice – I tried once, but got no notification that the reply had been posted, and it didn’t show up on the forum, so I assumed I’d made a mistake.

Thanks for the continued help. I have now followed all the steps in the guide successfully, but am still having trouble getting the videos to play. However, I’ll post my latest problem in a new query.

    Kind regards,

    John
