Apple HLS support in Flash

Foliovision › Forums › FV Player › Requests and Feedback › Apple HLS support in Flash

  • chris trainor 11 years, 10 months ago

    Hi all,

wondering if there’s a way to for a specific ‘type’ in the plugin. Right now when I issue a URL for iStuff for live streaming such as: http://hostname.com/path/video.mp4/playlist.m3u8 I see the warning about it only working for Apple stuff (obviously) but it doesn’t actually work because the type tag shown in the source is type=”video/flash” instead of type=”application/x-mpegurl”.

Is there any way to force this?

Trying to get one page to work with as many devices as possible. Wish all these various browsers would just do it the same. :)

Also, is there any way to force the flash engine on by default? With live streaming I generally have to send either via Flash (no iStuff) or HLS (iStuff only).

    Thanks,
    –Chris

    Hello Chris,

thank you for the bug report!

We will fix this and release a new version today.

Flash can be set as a default, but we don’t recommend that, as the HTML5 player in each browser has a better support for seeking when using normal videos served via HTTP.

We recommend that when you put in a M3U8 video, you also provide at least an alternative MP4 version of it.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Chris,

version 2.1.23 with this fix was released.

Please let us know how it works for your M3U8 videos.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,

Works well. Thanks for your awesome support. Next on my list to figure out what’s up is some issues with live streams to Android. An older flowplayer standalone has no issues on a flash enabled phone, but this one crashes the browser. And I need to investigate non-flash droids as well. Will check back with you next week.

Also, we’re definitely buying a license come Monday. Your support and responsiveness to issues is great.

    thanks,
    –Chris

    Hello Chris,

If you could please start a new thread about your Android issues, that would be great.

    Thanks!
    Martin

Will do probably tomorrow. Want to test with standalone (non plugin) flowplayer for a bit to get you better details.

Just confirming that the new plugin works with streaming live HLS? I have a 3 bitrate stream, and it kicks out an HTML5 video error. This is using the wordpress plugin….

    Thanks

    Hi Howard,

The plugin should be working with streaming live HLS…could you send us the technical details from the video checker and we’ll take a look at the start of next week?

    Thanks!

    Howard 12 years ago

Sure thing…… I think part of the issue is my CDN, edgecast, was using a beta adapter provided by Longtail, and I could watch streams from both PC’s, Macs, and IOS and Android devices….. It sends out an HLS and HDS stream. The error states I need to be watching the stream from an IOS device, so I guess I have to set up another fallback for PC’s…..

    Thanks

I am currently using Edgecast CDN, and utilize their HLS/HDS universal streaming…..

I can take JW player with a plugin to play on MAC’s, PC’s, and IOS devices…. the url for that is: “http://wpc.2dcc.edgecastcdn.net/002DCC/nc/tools/jw6hls.html?src=http://wpc.96C3.edgecastcdn.net/hls-live/2096C3/sod/sod-test/live-test,450,950,1950,.m3u8”

Will your plugin allow the same result, or will it only play on IOS using this as the input for the source: “http://wpc.96C3.edgecastcdn.net/hls-live/2096C3/sod/sod-test/live-test,450,950,1950,.m3u8”

I tried the above code with the plug in but received this error: Warning: We recommend that you also provide your M3U8 video in MP4 or WEBM format. HTTP Live Streaming (m3u8) is only supported by Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPad…).

    Thanks

    Hello Howard,

this is a bit tricky. The above link give you a quite expensive edition of JW Player – Premium edition. That one supports HLS playback using Flash.

This is not supported by Flowplayer 5, however there is a plugin, so we will have a look.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks,

This is my thought, I use Flash Encoder to send out an RTMP stream which Edgecast converts on the fly to HLS and HDS…… This will cover all desktops and IOS devices….

Then, my switcher software, which I use for live productions, can take the same live feed and send a single an RTMP stream as well, which I would use for any Androids that still have flash installed. It won’t cover everything, but should be a good start.

    Thanks

    Howard

I am testing a similar setup with edgeCast. I would appreciate details of the player used and the Switcher software as I want to cover as many clients as possible.

    Thanks.

    Hello Howard,

if you could provide a tip for Paul, that would be great.

    Hello Paul,

we are currently doing some additional research on this. Adding HLS support using a Flash plugin should be possible, although tricky.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Does your plugin play hls on all devices yet?

    Martin 10 years ago

    Hello Chan,

    unfortunately not yet.

We talked about this in our team though and for now we will only put in some fallback when HLS video is played on an HLS incompatible device (everything except iOS, Safari and recent Android).

    Thanks,
    Martin
