Web 2.0 Product Pages Done Right

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Stephen Spender of netconcepts put up a beautiful SEO weblog entry over at cNet.

He talks about the same old tired question of ecommerce websites badly organised for SEO with:

  • image navigation
  • image text
  • badly formatted URLs
  • session-cookie dependent content
  • no content

All true, but old news. Spender suggests Web 2.0 has just made it worse. Perhaps. But the real value in the entry are in the two following screen shots.

The first is a tabbed web interface of a good looking Web 2.0 ecommerce site.

REI tabbed content sections on product detail pages.
Standard tabbed Web 2.0 product page
REI progressive enhancement on product detail pages.

So what? Well take a look at what's under those tabs, what's under the covers.

That's what you get with Javascript turned off.

All the content of all the tabs is right there on a single content rich web page.

One could even argue that there is too much content on this page.

It would be better to have these section under different URLs making five or six pages with cleverly crafted hard URLs with interlinking anchor text in as site subsection. All that''s possible too by turning Javascript off but would require even better programming.

But the single page approache is a very good start.

Lost WordPress Admin Password and Email? How to get back into your weblog…

Friday, October 19th, 2007

What should you do if you've forgotten or lost your WordPress Admin password?

Step one of course would be to fill in your username and your email into the lost password form.

But what if you don't know one of either your username or your email?

Are you out of luck?

Not if you have admin access to your server.

First things first.

  1. login to your server admin account (cPanel, Hsphere, Plesk, etc...)
  2. open up PHP MyAdmin (see your host's help file)
  3. open up your WordPress weblog database
  4. don't panic when you see the complicated screen
  5. click on wp_users in the left hand column
  6. choose browse from the top menu
  7. you will see all your users with usernames and passwords
  8. go back to the login screen
  9. request a new password
  10. if necessary modify the email to one which will come to you

If you want to make your life miserable you can replace the hash key instead and login directly. But why bother when you can just go back to using the standard interface.

I'm sure I've saved at least one person a call to his or her server admin with this info.

Enjoy posting in your newly recovered WordPress weblog!

Acquisio Prices for PPC Managment Tool

Friday, October 5th, 2007

Aquisio Aquisio PPC management solution is touted by my friends over at SEOMoz as a recommended vendor. Unfortunately there is no pricing listed.

Acquisio

I had to spend twenty five minutes hunting around their website, waiting for business hours to come up in North America and running around their voice mail system before I could get a live quote. One of my pet peeves is websites which promote their product but won't post their prices.

To save you the trouble, the starting price is $1000/month for a 5 account package. Each client is allowed $1000-$3000 month spend. After that you are looking at a $250 bump per client who goes over $3000.

Not expensive in comparison to some of the other high end competitors, but out of budget for my projects.

There's space here for some invention - a consolidated administrative panel for Google AdWords, Yahoo PPC and MSN with client reports would be most welcome. Aquisio does not include MSN for the moment, although they promise it within a month of today.
