		<description>I think it's a consumer regulated market - ie, Wordpress consumers don't want to see ugly sponsored links on the bottom of their blog, so they'll more often than not look for an alternative.

I think that's borne out by your research above - beona fide links are more easily accepted - but those themes opened and found to be filled with sponsor links - either not installed, or soon uninstalled.
